The Job Centre, Bilston High Street
It is sad that one of the biggest new buildings in Bilston High Street is the Job Centre. In its favour, it is not a bad building, though it is unfortunate that the ground floor presents such a lifeless front to a shopping street. But the corner panel is a great compensation:
It may be ironic - even conscious irony - that the panel depicts the steel industry for which Bilston was famous, which was its major employer and which, on closure, was the greatest single cause of the need for a very large job centre. Whether the panel is made out of tile, terracotta, sculpted brick, or what, I do not know. Nor do I much care. It certainly includes earth that was burnt at some time and that is good enough to get a good piece of public art onto these pages. |
